Inspired by my mom's pizza fritta, I created this fry bread recipe. It takes only 4 ingredients including pre-made pizza dough, day old fresh breadcrumbs, oil for frying and salt. That's it. Eat it as a delicious crispy toast or add any toppings you like.

How to make fried dough
- Start by stretching a 2 oz. dough ball into a 4" to 5" circle. It's important that the dough is a bit sticky. Use damp fingers, so dough doesn't stick to you. Do not coat with flour.
- Next, dredge dough in breadcrumbs coating all sides.
- Heat oil for shallow frying to 350F. Pro tip: drop a breadcrumb into the hot oil to see if it turns golden brown. If so, the oil is hot enough.
- Fry dough, turning once, about 2 minutes per side or until puffed and golden brown.
- Finally, transfer to a wire rack and immediately season with salt. Add any additional toppings and eat warm.

Pizza Fritta Toppings
Like my mom used to do, I love topping my crispy fried bread with pizza sauce, cheese and fresh basil. This is the classic Italian fried dough. She also served deep fried dough dusted in powdered sugar for a sweet treat.

For breakfast, I reheated a leftover fried bread in the toaster and topped it with freshly sliced avocado and pickled vegetables. It is the best avocado toast I have had in a long time. The contrast between the crispy warm bread and the creamy avocado is amazing. You can also reheat the pizza fritta in an air-fryer.
My husband enjoyed his like an eggs Benedict. Topped with Canadian bacon, a poached egg, hollandaise and an herbed salad. He said it was so much better than the typical English muffin.

I hope you find this pizza fritta recipe easy as pie. You can use any pizza dough recipe you like or use store-bought. Leave a comment if you give it a go.
